This is a very popular lunchtime facial endorsed by several celebrities. This rejuvenating treatment gently reverses age spots, pigmentary irregularities that appear with age and reduces fine lines and wrinkles to give an overall appearance of fresher younger healthier skin. This is a very popular treatment at the centre and results are permanent.
This is also very commonly known as photo-facial. Rejuvenation means to renew and recover. As the term indicates, photorejuvenation reverses the damage to the skin due to UV exposure and recovers and renews fresher younger looking skin. UV exposure causes pigmentation of the skin, blotchiness and fine lines and wrinkles. All these can be gently and gradually reversed using a photo-facial.
At, The Skin Centre, we do a photorejuvenation using an IPL or Intense Pulsed Light. This device is used to flash light through the skin. Filters are used to select specific wavelengths of light to be flashed through the skin. Light in the skin gets absorbed by various chromatophores in the skin. The chromatophores can be black pigments (in case of pigmentation) or they can be red pigments (in case of blotchiness ) or a variable combination of the two. When these chromatophores absorb light, they get heated up and destroyed. The body’s defense come into play and repairs the destroyed tissue. So, over a period of time, the pigmentation and blotchiness gradually reverses and signs of ageing gently reverse. This results in a smoother, more uniform looking skin.
How long does each session take?
It depends upon the area being treated. Full face takes about 30 minutes.
How many sessions do I need?
Since the process of ageing doesn’t stop, the task of trying to slow down ageing doesn’t stop. About 4-6 sessions are required for significant benefit, thereafter, maintenance sessions may be taken for sustained improvement.
How soon will I see benefits?
After the first session, the tan fades away leaving a glow. Freckles and superficial pigmentation and blotchiness reduces significantly in about 3 sessions.
What aftercare do I need to use?
This is a lunchtime procedure, you need not take time off work. The most important aspect to remember is to use a sunscreen regularly. That is, use a sunscreen 20 mins before stepping out of the house and then once every 2 hours.
What can I expect during the session?
During the session, the face is cleansed. We then ice the skin thoroughly to cool the superficial part of the skin and apply a cold gel before starting the treatment. Each shot feels like the snap of a rubber band, it is a painless procedure. After the session, your skin may feel slightly warm and may tingle for a few hours.
What are the side effects?
The side effects are very few. There may be redness and warmth in the treated area for upto 24 hours. There may be a slight tingling sensation. There is a slight risk of a burn, the chances are about 2%, in case of a burn, it heals in about 2 weeks. There are no long term side effects.
IPL therapy or Intense Pulsed Light Therapy for Skin is one of the newer forms of facial rejuvenation. Visible broadband light is used in this procedure. It is an excellent way to safely and effectively treat sun damaged skin, brown discolouration, age spots and freckles, broken capillaries, rosacea, enlarged pores and dull complexion. This procedure can be done on the face, neck, chest, arms and hands.
This procedure typically requires four to six sessions performed at three-week intervals.
The treated area may appear red or flushed after the photorejuvenation treatment, something which usually fades within a few hours.
